Chao Chen PhD

Professor and Director, Northwest University, Xi’an, China

Dr. Chen received his PhD from Columbia University in the City of New York in Cell and Molecular Biology and completed his postdoctoral research in Human Genomics at the University of California and Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco. He founded the Human Genome Core Laboratory and became a research scientist at the Institute. As a senior scientist, he coordinated the DNA microarray project at Agilent in Palo Alto, California. After returning to China in 2000, he established the National Engineering Research Center for Miniaturized Detection Systems at Northwest University in Xi’an, China, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in biology. He worked as a professor, Director of the Center, and Vice President of the University. His research areas include pharmacogenomics and developing technologies to study gene SNPs and drug functions. He was elected as the Chairman of the China Pharmacogenomics Association. In 2002, he started the research project on blood substitutes and currently serves as the Chairman of the China Medical and Blood Substitute Alliance. He is the founder of several biotechnological companies. In addition to research, Dr. Chen has mentored about 30 PhD and over 100 MS students during his tenure as a professor at the university. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and holds more than 50 patents.
