Prof. Chengmin Yang is the former director and professor of the Institute of Transfusion Medicine, Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and one of the founders of the Chinese Society of Blood Transfusion and 《 The Chinese Journal of Blood Transfusion》, and has served as the first and second vice president and secretary-general of the Society, as well as the director of five national academies/associations such as “the Red Cross Society of China”, etc. He is a famous veteran expert in the academic fields of transfusion medicine and biomedical engineering in China, and enjoys a good reputation as a leading figure or flagship of“Chinese transfusion science”.

In the past 73 years, he，as a principal investigator, has undertaken more than 10 major research projects at the national or provincial level in China, and filled 8 scientific and technology gaps for China. He is the pioneer of plastic blood bags in China, and has published more than 70 academic papers in China and abroad, which have been cited by 133 scholars for 589 times. He was the editor-in-chief of China’s first 《《Clinical Transfusion Medicine》 (1993), 《Basic Science Transfusion Medicine》(2001),and the 1st and 2nd editions of Chinese Transfusion Medicine》(2017 and 2022).

He is the pioneer in researching human-derived hemoglobin-based blood substitutes in China for the passed 30 years. He is the first scientist to utilize hemoglobin isolated from human placental blood or the disposed blood after stem cells removing. He obtained 10 patents in China. He served 3 times as the co-chairman of ISBS or executive chairman. He was invited 8 times as a keynote speaker or as a special speaker at ISBS and the International Symposium on Nanomedicine, held in China, USA, Canada, India, Turkey and Japan, and received wide attention from the participants. His presentation in the 17th ISBS in Japan, 2019, on “Discussion of research and development design guidance concepts for HBOCs” was included as the first article in the general introduction of the book “Nanobiotherapeutic based Blood Substitutes”, edited by Prof. Thomas Ming Swi Chang. He is currently the Honorary Chairman of “China Frontiers of Transfusion Medicine Forum”, “Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering Blood Substitutes Branch (Preparatory Committee)”, and the International Scientific Advisor of ISBS.
