Leticia Hosta-Rigau MD

Associate Professor, Health, Cell and Drug Technologies, Technical University of Denmark

Associate Professor Leticia Hosta-Rigau is a Spanish-born researcher who has been leading the Biomimetics, Biocarriers, and Bioimplants (The 3Bs) group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) since 2015. With a strong interdisciplinary background in materials science, chemistry, and molecular biology, her research focuses on developing high-performance materials for therapeutic delivery and regenerative medicine, drawing inspiration from biological systems. A key area of investigation within her group is the development of artificial red blood cells, designed for use in situations where donor blood is unavailable.

Throughout her career, Associate Professor Hosta-Rigau has made significant contributions to her field, publishing 67 peer-reviewed articles, authoring two book chapters, and holding two patents. Her work has been featured in leading scientific journals, including Advanced Materials and ACS Nano. She has secured substantial research funding, most notably through the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant. She has also received several honors, including the L’Oreal-Unesco “For Women in Science” Award, and has been twice nominated for the Danish EliteForsk Prize.

At the 19th International Symposium on Blood Substitutes, Associate Professor Hosta-Rigau will present her pioneering research on synthetic red blood cell mimics using metal-organic frameworks. This cutting-edge work underscores the potential of biomimetic strategies to revolutionize healthcare and therapeutic technologies.
